The entry in the national Tidy Towns competition, 2023, included a submission regarding the SECAD Sustainable Communities training programme 2021-22, that involved participants from a number of Skibbereen community organisations and interested individuals. The selected project was to develop the green walkways made possible by the flood relief scheme in the last ten years. Set out in three stages, the boardwalk proposal supports the provision of alternative walkways through the town, enabling “a more vibrant commercial hub for pedestrian activities” (p. 13).
When we asked the author for approval to include details from the report in the Skibbereen submssion for the Tidy Towns competition, he responded positively: “All the information generated for the project belongs to the community groups“.
Since the Town Centre First regeneration plan for Skibbereen is now underway it is timely to share the design statement as agreed by participants in the SECAD Skibbereen WhatsApp group who were involved in contributing to the document, available to view and download for offline reading below.
In addition, we wish to share a video recorded featuring selected participants of the group about the importance of the Ilen River to the town of Skibbereen and its selection as our project for the SECAD Sustainable Communities training programme, 2021-22. Unfortunately, our WordPress plan does not include video content so we will aim to share the video directly in our social channels.
